Description
Napoleon I, seated at left, watches the fighting taking place during the Battle of Borodino on September 7, 1812. That bloody battle was part of the French invasion of Russia during the Napoleonic Wars. The Russian artist Vasily Vereshchagin created this image, one of a series of paintings depicting Napoleons Russian campaign. The artists intention was to portray the horrors of war, and he used this series of paintings in a book he published in London, 1812: Napoleon I in Russia (1899).
