Funds for initial research and a survey of sites in Mathews County of historical and cultural significance. A rural county with 8,900 residents, Mathews County is defined geographically and culturally by the Chesapeake Bay and other significant waterways. The research eventually will be compiled into a monograph that will be made available to schools, libraries, and historical societies. The grant was subsequently declined by the grantee, with no funds spent.
