Description
An 1848 engraved map of Virginia by civil engineer Claudius Crozet details the internal improvements that had been made and continued to be made in the state. A key at left indicates the status of railroads, canals, and turnpikes. The General Assembly commissioned Crozet to create this map and an accompanying history titled Outline of the Improvements in the State of Virginia (1848). This project was designed to highlight internal improvements in the states infrastructure and to advertise Virginias economic potential. Citation: A Map of the Internal Improvements of Virginia.
