Description
The Anti-Saloon League of Virginia, established in 1901, led the movement that brought Prohibition to the state in 1916. While the state had established the Virginia Society for the Promotion of Temperance as early as October 1826, the league became a major force in Virginia politics, especially within the Democratic Party, in the first two decades of the twentieth century. The league was an affiliate of the Ohio-based Anti-Saloon League of America, which published this broadside in support of the 1914 Sheppard-Hobson Constitutional Amendment to outlaw the manufacture, transportation, exportation, or importation of alcohol for sale in the United States and its territories. Symbolizing the growing power of the dry lobby, the bill passed narrowly in the U.S. House of Representatives, but fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to proceed.
