Description
A hand-drawn architectural sketch by Thomas Jefferson shows a portion of his design for the lower portico of Pavilion VII on the lawn at the University of Virginia. Pavilion VII, with Doric columns in the Greek style, served as both a home and classroom for a professor at the university. In his notes on the left of the drawing, Jefferson indicates where the top of the window should reach, as well as where the entablature—the decorative moldings and bands at the top of the column—should begin and end.
