Description
The goal of "Lineage" was to construct a history of the Brown family of Charles City, Virginia, that not only established facts and details about their lives and activities, but also to record information about their lifestyle, culture, customs, beliefs, and values. It provides critical new information about many aspects fo the lives of free Blacks in Virginia, including their religious life and practices (they established a church in 1810) and their early efforts at education (they established local schools; they were among the first students at Hampton University and what is now Virginia State University, and played key roles in the history and development of the latter university; they were also among the early Blacks at Harvard and other major American universities." "The Lineage of Abraham" provides a look at a group that included property owners, businessmen, politically astute and active citizens--Blacks whose lifestyle from the 18th century to the present represents a level of sophistication and gentility (albeit maintained by much hard work and no little harassment and humiliation) rarely associated with Black families. "The Lineage of Abraham, The Biography of a Free Black Family in Charles City, Virginia" was self published in 1998.
