Description
This is the title page of a report on Virginia that John Clayton, a Church of England clergyman in Jamestown from 1684 and 1686, presented to the Royal Society in London on May 12,1688. Clayton had a keen interest in the natural sciences and recorded observations on Virginias animals, geology, native peoples, plants, and weather. After he left Virginia, Clayton became the rector of the Church of All Saints in Crofton, Yorkshire. Claytons letter shown here was published in Washington, D.C., in 1844.
