Description
A March 27, 1913, letter from the educational reformer J. H. Dillard to school superintendents in the South addresses the need to improve the character and quality of teaching in African American rural schools. He notes that perhaps 90 percent of rural school teachers have had only limited, local education, and he proposes the establishment of countywide training schools to help teachers receive better preparation. According to the letterhead, Dillard was then serving on the board of the John F. Slater Fund, as the chairman of the foundations Educational Committee, and as the director of the foundations office in New Orleans. Citation: Dillard Family Papers, 1717-1964, Accession #9498.
