Description
The painting entitled Let Us Have Peace, 1865 by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863-1930) was completed around 1920 and illustrates the surrender of Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant, thus ending the Civil War. Ferris was the son of a portrait painter and a native of Philadelphia. He began his formal studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He completed his education at the Julian Academy in Paris where he studied under Bouguereau and Jean Léon Gérôme. By 1888 he had completed his education. This work is signed in lower right corner.
