Description
Gilbert du Motier, the marquis de Lafayette, is the subject of this lithograph portrait by Alois Senefelder, the German inventor of the lithograph process. Lafayette, a French aristocrat and military officer, joined the American cause during the Revolutionary War. Some of the places where he fought during his career, both in America and Europe, are enclosed in the garland at the bottom of the lithograph.
