Description
Landon Carter, son of the powerful Virginia landowner Robert King Carter, poses with his right hand on his hip and his left hand petting a dog. A prominent politician, Landon Carter was perhaps the most prolific published Virginia writer of his generation—the author of four major political pamphlets, nearly fifty newspaper essays, and a revealing personal diary. This modern photograph shows the original oil portrait, believed to be the work of artist John Hesselius, that hangs in the library at Sabine Hall, Carters 1735 residence in Tappahannock, Virginia.
