Description
A proclamation issued by King Charles I on January 6, 1630 (1631 in the New Style calendar), sets out regulations concerning the cultivation and sale of tobacco, specifically banning its growth in England, Ireland, Wales, and the islands of Jersey and Guersney and its importation from the colonies of other countries. The king further decreed that all tobacco from the American colonies must pass through the port of London to ensure its quality so that Our Subjects be not abused by corrupt Tobacco.
