This ballot box marked Colored was used to collect African American votes in the King George County election held on October 22, 1867. African American men had their votes counted for the first time in Virginia history that day. Army officers conducted the election and kept separate tallies of the black and white votes. In King George County, and probably other counties, whites and blacks used different ballot boxes.
