Description
Judith Robinson Braxton—a niece of John Robinson, the powerful Speaker of the House of Burgesses, and the first wife of the Virginia politician Carter Braxton—is portrayed in this early twentieth-century painting. Braxton died giving birth to the second of her two daughters in December 1757. Probably based on an eighteenth-century portrait by English artist John Wollaston, this watercolor copy was executed by Julia S. Wooldridge.
