Description
John S. Wise, a drillmaster with the rank of second lieutenant in the Confederate army, is the subject of this sepia-toned photograph taken in 1865. Many years later Wise signed this mounted photograph For Jennings C. Wise, one of his nine children. (John S. Wise had seven sons and two daughters.) Jennings Wise was a lawyer in private practice, but he also served for a time as a professor and as Commandant of Cadets at the Virginia Military Institute, where both he and his father matriculated.
