Domina Virginia Farrer Collegit. 5th State. [London]: Sold by John Overton, [ca.1667]. LC-G&M. A revised version of John Farrers manuscript map was engraved by John Goddard and published by John Stephenson in the third edition of Edward Wiliamss Virgo Triumphans (1651). Shortly after Farrers death, his daughter Virginia reissued this curious map, substituting her name for her fathers and changing the title from A mapp of Virginia discovered to ye Falls to A mapp of Virginia discovered to ye Hills. It is the first published map of a part of North America to include a womans name. Like the manuscript map, the printed version perpetuates the mistaken notion that it was only a short distance from Drakes landing at New Albion to the headwaters of the James River, noting that it is only ten dayes march with 50. foote and 30. horsmen. The fourth and fifth states of the map have been revised to show the northwest passage blocked by an isthmus across A Mighty great Lake.
