Description
In accordance with this May 1832 indenture of apprenticeship, eleven-year-old George Hollowell, a free negro boy, was apprenticed as a house servant and famer to Archibald Atkinson in Isle of Wight County. Hollowell would have to serve out the apprenticeship until he was twenty-one. This indenture was created at the behest of the Overseers of the Poor, a local agency that bound out orphans or those considered a burden on the state. Hollowell (sometimes spelled Holliway) fell into the latter category as his mother, Olive, was still alive when this indenture was made.
