This mid-eighteenth-century building in Fredericksburg once housed an apothecary, or pharmacy, founded by the Revolutionary-era physician Hugh Mercer. The building is currently a museum, the Hugh Mercer Apothecary, devoted to showcasing Dr. Mercer and medical practices in the eighteenth century, Frances Benjamin Johnston, of Washington, D.C., took this photograph between 1927 and 1929 as part of a privately funded project to document the architecture of Old Falmouth, Fredericksburg, and the nearby Chatham estate.
