Description
Flames shoot out of Ludgate, the westernmost gate in the fortifications that protected London, during the Great Fire of London in 1666. Old Saint Pauls Cathedral, completed in the fourteenth century, can be seen burning in the distance. Both the gate and the cathedral were destroyed in the conflagration. This painting was made around 1670 by an unknown British artist.
