On October 5, 1968, Governor Mills E. Godwin delivers a speech on the football field of the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, praising the qualities that the school instills in its students. Godwin said that if counterculture radicals such as the Yippies (members of the Youth International Party) attended VMI, they would obtain an education and terminate their protesting.
