Description
Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson was a general in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War (1861-1865), and the namesake of the Stonewall Brigade, a collection of Virginia troops that, under Jacksons command, saw action in many of the bloodiest battles of the war. A veteran of the Mexican War (1846-1848), Jackson was a stern taskmaster who drilled the troops relentlessly. The first military executions for desertion in the Army of Northern Virginia included men from the Stonewall Brigade shot by firing squad under Jacksons orders. Jackson himself was mortally wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville (1863).
