A newspaper article published in Richmonds Daily Dispatchon April 20, 1880, reports on the funeral and burial of Joseph Cox, who is described as formerly a leader of the Republican party in Richmond, and at the time of his death a prominent colored Mason. Baptist minister Anthony Binga Jr. conducted the church services, and Coxs remains were escorted to Maury Cemetery [also known as Mount Olivet Cemetery] by several colored organizations, including the Knights Templar, Masons, and Captain Ben.
