Description
A circa 1856 watercolor shows a view of Bassau, a fishing village in Liberia. (The town name appears as Bassa Cove in an 1839 map.) Liberia was a colony in West Africa where freed slaves were sent by the American Colonization Society. This painting is part of the American Colonization Society Collection at the Library of Congress.
