Description
A second-story bridge connects the 1841 Exchange Hotel (at right) on Franklin Street in Richmond to the newer Ballard House, which was constructed in 1855-1856. John P. Ballard owned both hotels. The Ballard and the Exchange survived the fires set by the evacuating Confederate army in April 1865, but both hotels closed by 1896. The Exchange building was demolished in 1900, and the Ballard in 1920.
