Description
Union soldiers and a wounded African American relax near a cooking fire, while African American women stand and sit in the background of this photograph taken in Culpeper Court House in mid-August 1862. This was one of a series of images made by famed photographer Timothy OSullivan in the aftermath of the Battle of Cedar Mountain, which had taken place nearby on August 9, 1862. Less than two weeks after the battle, Union forces were forced to evacuate Culpeper County on the arrival of Confederate general Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia.
