Description
John Herbert Shaw, a 103-year-old Confederate veteran who had served under J. E. B. Stuart, kicks up his heels and dances at a May 1938 event at R. E. Lee Camp Soldiers Home in Richmond. The soldiers home had been established by an organization of Confederate veterans in 1885 to serve financially needy, often disabled, veterans of the war. At the height of the homes popularity, from 1890 to 1910, roughly 300 veterans resided there. The last resident died in 1941.
