. Confederate dead are strewn along the Hagerstown road in Maryland in the aftermath of the Battle of Antietam which took place on September 17, 1862. This was one of a series of images taken by Alexander Gardner, who was working as a war ophotographer dfor Mathew and James F. Gibson, war photographers employed by Mathew Brady who ran a studio in washington, D.C.
