Description
An engraving published on the front page of the May 25, 1867, edition of Harpers Weekly, depicts young African American students studying their lessons on the street. The students attended a school established by the Bureau for Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. According to the accompanying article titled Educating the Freedmen, the Freedmens schools are firmly established and successful, are now seldom interrupted by the rebels, and the scoffing papers have been forced into silence.
