In his memoir, A Colored Mans Reminiscences of James Madison (1865), Paul Jennings relates his experiences as the fourth presidents enslaved footman in the White House. The narrative was initially published in the January 1863 edition of the Historical Magazine and Notes and Queries Concerning the Antiquities, History and Biography of America. Two years later the magazines editor, John Gilmary Shea, had seventy-five copies of the memoir privately printed in Brooklyn, New York.
