At the outbreak of the war, the Eastern Shore was part of secessionist Virginia. Defending it fell to the people of the shore, and they quickly took up arms. On the other hand many Eastern Shoremen also enlisted in the Union army as well. The war carried soldiers of both sides to distant regions of the country, and many were involved in horrific battles. Some would never come home.
