Chauncey Spencer
A Place in the Sky
Chauncey Spencer-native of Lynchburg, Virginia, and son of Harlem Renaissance poet, Anne Spencer-secured his own place in American aviation history during May 1939 when he and fellow pilot, Dale White, embarked on a historic 3,000 mile flight from Chicago's Harlem Airport to Washington, DC. The journey led to a fateful meeting with Missouri senator Harry Truman that influenced historic changes in American history.
This video features excerpts from a 2001 oral history interview conducted with Chauncey Spencer at his home in Lynchburg, Virginia, rare historical photographs, archival World War II film footage, and a powerful reading of Spencer's 1953 poem, "Prayer for Brotherhood."
