Description
Three generations of the Byrd family speak via radio from the governors mansion in Richmond to Richard E. Byrd Jr., an explorer who was then on the North Pole. From right to left is Byrds brother, Governor Harry F. Byrd; his mother, Eleanor Flood Byrd; and his nephew (and son of the governor), Harry F. Byrd Jr. Eleven-year-old Harry at the microphone asked his uncle to bring back a few polar bears, his mother told him to be careful, and the governor marveled over the radio technology that could reach the Arctic. Though Richard Byrd earned fame as the first man to fly to the North Pole, many scientists are skeptical that he actually reached that destination. Citation: Harry F. Byrd Jr., Photographs, circa 1906-1968, 2005, Accession #10320-l, Special Collections, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va.
