Description
This is the title page for the second edition of John Breretons A Briefe and true Relation of the Discoverie of the North part of Virginia (1602), the first English book to describe the coast of what is now New England. Brereton served as navigator on the 1602 colonizing voyage to the North part of Virginia (New England) headed by Captain Bartholomew Gosnold. The expedition made landfall near what is now Portland, Maine, and navigated around Cape Cod, Nantucket, Marthas Vineyard (named for Gosnolds deceased child), and Cuttyhunk Island, for where a small fort was established. Brereton wrote this text to promote colonization efforts, and in this second edition included earlier treatises from similar-minded propagandists, such as Edward Hayes and Richard Hakluyt the Elder.
