Banjo player Polk Miller and his Old South Quartette, a group of four African Americans, perform the Confederate marching song, The Bonnie Blue Flag. This cylinder recording was made in Richmond in 1909, nearly forty-five years after the Civil War ended. The Bonnie Blue flag, which featured a single white star on a blue background, was an early unofficial banner of the Confederacy. Polk Miller and his quartet toured the United States in the early 1910s, performing music of Old Times Down South, including spirituals and comedic songs, some reflecting a romanticized view of slavery and plantation life in the old South.
