Description
This group portrait depicts the so-called Big Four—Readjuster members of the Senate of Virginia who opposed William Mahones party management—along with their political ally, John E. Massey. From left to right are: Andrew Lybrook, of Patrick County; Peyton G. Hale, of Grayson County; Samuel H. Newberry, of Bland County; Massey, of Albemarle County; and Benjamin Williams, of Nottoway County. David Silvette, who painted this image in 1929, portrayed the group in front of a map of Virginia. This painting is part of the Commonwealth of Virginias art collection.
