Description
An engraved illustration in John W. Barber and Elizabeth G. Barbers Historical, Poetical & Pictorial American Scenes (1850) depicts the Quaker abolitionist Anthony Benezet teaching African American children. The accompanying text describes the French-born philanthropist as a friend to the poor and distressed of every description, and as a man who made great exertions to have the slave trade suppressed.
