Description
The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission has hosted an annual Signature Conference Series in partnership with Virginia universities since 2009. The series, exploring a different Civil War theme each year, has brought together premier historians and humanities scholars to discuss with the public the broad scope of the Civil War’s influence in Virginia, national, and world history. Causes Won and Lost: The End of the Civil War, to be held April 18, 2015 at University of Virginia, will function as the closing event in the Commission’s series and examine the war’s closing events as well as its lasting impact on American culture. To end its Signature Conference series, the Commission has contracted some of the world’s most renowned Civil War historians to discuss the war’s legacies among all Americans, and how those legacies have played out in the reconstruction of a singular nation. The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Foundation, the Commission’s fundraising arm, therefore respectfully requests $7,000 from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities in support of honoraria for the historians participating at the 2015 Signature Conference. This endowment would help facilitate the Commission’s commitment to strong educational programs that embrace multiple perspectives in the interest of drawing as broad an audience as possible.
