Description

Gladys C. Cooke, an 80-year-old life-long resident of the Carver neighborhood in Richmond, is shown seated on her porch in this 1990 photograph. She had lived through various urban renewal projects in her area, one of which zoned her neighborhood as “industrial” rather than “residential.” At the time of this photograph, activists were in the process of rezoning her street back to “residential-single family.” In her interview with Richmond Times-Dispatch, Cooke said: “I don’t want to see any more industry.”
